Nokia's S60 Touch Interface demonstrated

Update: The press release is out and with it, more information about the new S60 software: existing S60 3rd Edition apps will run on touch-enabled devices unmodified (but can be further enhanced, natch); generic proximity and light sensors supported; a UI Accelerator Toolkit enables "impressive" graphical effects; and Flash Video will be supported in the S60 web browser. Available to S60 device manufacturers "during 2008." A bit more specificity please, Nokia?

Looks pretty sweet!
Nokia have had the tech to do this with S60 since 3rd Edition was developed way back in 2005 (Support for Touch was folded into S60 from their S80/S90 platforms) and I was pretty disappointed not to see it implemented on the E90. About time they pulled their thumb out and brought touch to S60 (loving it on the N800/770 and even the old 7710).
I'm pretty pleased that they've given the option to use a stylus as this is one of my minor annoyances with the iPhone/iPod Touch. Also the haptic feedback is a great feature, again a minor annoyance from the Apple devices.
Still, one thing Nokia still haven't got right is marketing. I mean how cheesy was that video!! The twinkle in the girls eye at the end? Come on.
Anyway I'll now leave this thread to the iPhone fans who'll probably have a field day with this ;)

Man, I thought the N95 was GOD of all phones. After seeing this, and if this phone has the same specs as the N95 but touch screen. This will be "GOD" of all phones. Apple fans, Iphone won't be able to compare to this phone. Man I can't wait to this phone comes out! Sign me up NOKIA!!!!! NOKIA as usual "ROCKS"

Looks like the iPhone haters beat the iPhone fanatics to the punch...

Yes, I so agree with you about the marketing GREAT phones from nokia. If nokia can market there phones like Apple did then I think Nokia will have a much better chance selling alot more phones in the future. They should do some great marketing on this touch screen phone in the future when it comes out. Compare with Apples IPhone on TV then they will totally "ROCK"!! Hopefully Nokia will learn to be a much better marketing on there "HIGH END" phones in the future.

Wow, So Nokia finally stepped up their game. It's about time. Should be interesting.

Agree on the amateurish video....and who was that clown walking back and forth while the video was running? In spite of all of this, great looking device.

Wow, as an iPhone owner I must admit that looks great. This is exactly what the market needs, something to hold Apple accountable and get them on the ball. They have neglected us and not given us what we've asked for: 1) MMS 2) 3rd Party App Support 3) Flash 4) Video Camera, I could go on and on...

The interface looks really fast and the menus flow well and appear very responsive. Even on a fast device, WM6 doesn't react this quick so intrigued to see it in the fleash!

Can you guys please tell me what it is that you would like Nokia's marketing to be? What is it that's missing and what would make it perfect? I'm just interested and curious!:)

doesn't it look like the new Motorola SKARVEN (the one that was leaked earlier)
i mean like really looks like it it like the same device (not completely but still resembles it http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2007/10/10/motorolas-2008-lineup-leaked-in-amsterdam/ )
any way i am really looking forward to seeing the new actual device and the way it'll work with fingers only !!!
wesrubix @ Jan 4th 2008 5:21PM
Yeah and maybe they'll get off their ass and get their new S60 devices to pair with BMW bluetooth correctly.

The twinkle at the end is pretty cheesy. Other than that, it seems to be a pretty standard Euro-style commercial. I don't see what the big deal is.
So the race is on to see what comes out first: this or the second generation of the iPhone.

what i want to know is if the tactile/haptic feedback is going to be like what i understand the motorola razr v9 to be - just a vibration to acknowledge a key press or will it be some sort of 'localized' feedback on the phone? or maybe a couple of short bursts to indicate which button was pushed? i dont know if any of those ideas are reasonable or doable but at the same time i dont really see the big deal about haptic feedback if it doesnt tell you much more than youve hit a button - still wouldnt help with no-look dialing for instance which is what i understand to be alot of peoples gripes with the iphones lack of tactile feedback

Not bad, but please get rid of that miniature keyboard. As soon as you're walking, in a bus, car or train it's unusable.
Philip Dhingra @ Nov 12th 2007 2:39PM
That was a really bad presentation. The only proof that it's tactile is a voice saying so. No wonder Apple makes a killing. They need something that really shows what it's like, a killer video like Jeff Han's multi-touch demo, or something on that level. A video with a close-up showing the screen actually making bumps for tactile feedback would be the difference between unveiling the next Jesus Phone versus yet another footnote at CES.
